What the Heck Is Tatting, Anyway? And Where Did It Come From?

About Chele's Lace
Hi! I’m Michele Glover, a tatter based near Charlotte, NC. Tatting is my obsession and my goal is to share the beauty of this nearly lost artform.
If you don’t know what tatting is, it’s lace making using shuttles. What’s a shuttle? It’s a tool made out of plastic, metal or even bone used for making textiles. You may have them in weaving.
I first learned how to tat from watching my grandmother doing it as a child. I knew it was beautiful and I wanted to continue the tradition. Also, it keeps my hands busy. You know what they say about idle hands!
In addition to lace making, I also spend my time volunteering and teaching people about this craft, the history and hopefully the future of it!
Along with creating beautiful snowflakes, angels, lace and more, I also enjoy collecting intricate shuttles. There are so many different types. Some of them have etching on them. One of my favorite hobbies is searching through craft stores and antique malls to see if I can find any hidden tatting shuttles buried in the treasure.
